Building Fatigue Resistance: The Role of Intensity in Long-Event Training
In a long event, the effort that feels comfortable early can feel very different several hours later. Your breathing becomes heavier. Your posture starts to change. Holding the same pace or power takes more concentration, and small decisions become harder.
As a coach, I want training to prepare you for that part of the day: the point when you still have work to do and staying steady requires more from you.
That ability to preserve your capacity as an event unfolds is often called durability, or fatigue resistance. It is a major reason we look beyond what an athlete can produce when fresh. We also want to understand how much of that ability remains after hours of exercise.
Well-placed intensity can help develop that capacity when it sits within consistent endurance training, adequate fueling, and recovery.
Long, easy sessions remain essential. They provide time to develop endurance, practice fueling, and become comfortable with the physical demands of your event. Intensity adds a different training stimulus, challenging you to produce and sustain more work for shorter periods.
For coaching, the important question becomes: What type of intensity does this athlete need, and how much can they recover from?
Intensity covers a wide range of work. Controlled tempo, threshold intervals, short aerobic intervals, and relaxed strides each serve different purposes. A session should have a clear job before we decide how hard to make it.
Here are three ways I think about using that work in preparation for long events.
1. Develop quality.
For an athlete already prepared for interval training, an example might be four to six three-minute bike efforts at a hard but repeatable intensity, with three minutes of easy riding between efforts. The aim is consistent output, controlled execution, and enough recovery to complete each repetition well.
Starting the first effort too hard and barely surviving the last one changes the session. I want an athlete learning how to apply effort deliberately and repeat it.
2. Build the ability to sustain controlled pressure.
Long events require extended periods of purposeful, steady work. Controlled intervals can provide a manageable way to practice that demand.
An example might be three ten to twenty-minute bike intervals at a comfortably hard effort below threshold, separated by easy riding. The athlete practices maintaining posture, rhythm, breathing, and attention as the work accumulates.
The progression might be a little more total time at that effort, a longer interval, or better control at the same workload. Increasing the intensity is only one option.
Sometimes the most useful improvement is completing the same session with less strain and recovering better afterward.
3. Introduce event-specific effort later in selected longer sessions.
Once an athlete has established consistency and can handle the duration comfortably, we may place a small amount of planned race-effort work later in a longer session.
For example, an experienced athlete might include two fifteen-minute blocks at planned long-course race effort in the latter part of an endurance ride. This gives us an opportunity to assess how pacing, fueling, position, and concentration hold up together.
This is a progression to earn. It requires appropriate preparation, and it should remain controlled. Running deserves particular care because adding harder work late also increases the mechanical demands on tired legs.
If form deteriorates or the intended effort becomes a struggle, we adjust. Forcing the numbers tells us little about readiness to race well.
These sessions are examples of different purposes, not three workouts to add to every week. For triathletes, intensity across swimming, cycling, and running all contributes to the total load.
There is also a point where adding more intensity reduces the quality of the overall program. If a hard session repeatedly disrupts the next several days, we need to reconsider its dose, timing, or place in the plan.
I want athletes to absorb their training. That means arriving at key sessions adequately fueled, practicing the nutrition they will need during longer efforts, and allowing recovery afterward. Deliberately running out of energy does not make a session a better test of durability.
When assessing progress, look beyond your best interval:
Can you hold your posture and rhythm later in a session?
Does the same workload feel more manageable under similar conditions?
Can you complete the final repetition with the same control as the first?
Are you fueling consistently and recovering well enough to continue your week?
Heat, terrain, sleep, and nutrition affect those answers, so compare sessions with context.
The goal is to build an athlete who can keep making good decisions and producing useful work as fatigue accumulates. Intensity has a valuable role in that process when the dose supports the rest of the training.
Before adding more hard work, ask: What capacity am I trying to build, and is my current training showing that I am ready for the next step?
