Athlete Spotlight- Jamis Gresik

1. I’m in Denver, married w/ a 3mo old son. I am a CFA charterholder and build investment portfolios for a living. We love to travel (and collect a bit of wine too!)

2. Started in January with the goal of going from strength to endurance sports to “try it out” by doing the Boulder 70.3. Everything felt(feels) unfamiliar; I literally did the opposite of endurance for the last 15 years. I want to do a full for my 40th in a couple years.

3. learning to train around our newborn has introduced a range of challenges 😂😂.

4. What helps me is a general attitude of like if something is expected of me and I’ve commmitted to it, I really see it as non-negotiable. I’ve had to learn that sometimes it’s just not possible to get a workout in with our son, and it’s okay to move workouts as long as I still get the total work done for the week. Having my wife’s support is without a doubt the key to all of this.

5. too many. when I did my first open water swim in my wetsuit and afterwards I asked you if we should cancel the race bc I thought I was going to drown 😂😂 and you talked me off that. Or when I was training through the stuff with my foot right before the race. I remember the morning of the race being like well I can swim and bike and then we’ll see, and you said like just go out there and become a finisher don’t think about anything else. It really helped knowing you knew I could finish.

6. finishing a half Ironman after never even having run more than 10k.

7. I’ve realized my ability to show up is huge. I rarely/never have to contended with getting “motivated”. I genuinely love to train, and I think this is because in Olympic weightlifting you do the same three or four things over and over and over for years.

8. it’s ok to be slow. It’s ok to be/feel like a beginner. Showing up consistently can do wonders.

9. I have enjoyed the challenges of having humility, staying positive, and just having fun training and doing hard things that come with that. Like I get to do these things, so many can’t or won’t ever even know what it’s like to try. I feel really grateful sometimes at the most random moments during training. I think I’m happier because I get to train so much.

10. I have some races planned for 2027 but major goals to do a full and either Mallorca (favorite island vacation and it’s not close. extremely strong endorsement) or Sardinia in 2028. A full seems like a big hard challenge and I want to see if I can do it. I want another excuse to go to the other places 😂😂😂.
